Where we work

HVAC marketing in Prince Edward Island

More than a third of PEI homes rely on a heat pump as their main heating system, and oil still heats more than a quarter. With the main efficiencyPEI heat-pump programs closed as of October 2026, Island HVAC marketing has to sell on service, reputation and value rather than free equipment.

Written by Ali Sedighi, MBALast updated:

On Prince Edward Island, the heat pump is already the everyday heating system for more than a third of homes. In 2023, heat pumps were the primary heating system for 36% of PEI households, while 28% used oil, 18% electricity and 8% wood, according to Statistics Canada. The maritime climate brings cold, snowy winters moderated by the surrounding Gulf of St. Lawrence. Several heat-pump programs closed in 2026, which changes what Island HVAC companies can say in their ads. Details below are as of October 2026.

The PEI HVAC market

Short answer: a small, close-knit market where reputation travels fast, centred on Charlottetown and Summerside.

Charlottetown and Summerside are the Island's two cities, and Stratford, Three Rivers and Cornwall complete the top five in the 2021 Census. Depending on where you are based, you may realistically cover several of these communities, so the marketing question is often less "which town?" and more "which services, and how do we stand out?"

The installed base is the opportunity. With more than a third of homes already relying on heat pumps, service, cleaning, repair and eventual replacement are steady work. The oil-heated segment (28%) remains a conversion market, now without the free-equipment programs that were available before.

Seasonality on the Island

Short answer: a long, snowy heating season moderated by the Gulf, with installs best planned for the warmer months.

  • Fall: heat-pump servicing and backup-heat checks before winter.
  • Winter: repair and no-heat calls; fast answering wins in a small market where people call the next name if you don't pick up.
  • Spring and summer: replacement and new-install campaigns, plus maintenance-plan sign-ups.

Regulators to know on PEI

Short answer: provincial Inspection Services covers most HVAC-related technical safety and licensing.

The Mechanical Contractor Licence renewal date is a useful reminder to check that the licence details on your website and Business Profile are current.

Programs that affect PEI HVAC demand

Short answer: the big heat-pump programs have closed; free insulation for income-qualified homeowners has expanded.

As of October 2026:

For marketing, the honest message right now is about value and service, with a note that a federal rebate has been announced for 2027. "Ask us to let you know when it opens" is fair; "rebates available now" is not.

How we'd market a PEI HVAC company

Short answer: own the service relationship with existing heat-pump owners and earn the Island's trust online.

  1. Heat-pump service pages for cleaning, repair and replacement, by the brands you support.
  2. A maintenance-plan offer that keeps your schedule steady while install demand resets after the program closures.
  3. Program-accurate content: remove "free heat pump" claims and add a dated status page.
  4. Reviews and community presence. In a small market, a strong review profile carries a long way. GasBoilers.ca, a division we built for CANRO Heat, shows the power of a focused profile: a 5.0★ rating from 76+ Google reviews.
  5. Simple, fast website. Our website packages start with a 5–7 page Essential build, often enough for an Island company.

Frequently asked questions

Are there still free heat pumps on PEI?

As of October 2026, the efficiencyPEI Free Heat Pump Program and its oil-to-heat-pump stream show applications as closed on the official page, and the residential heat pump equipment rebates ended on April 15, 2026. Don't advertise them as available.

Can customers still claim the efficiencyPEI heat pump rebate?

Purchases made between April 15, 2025 and April 15, 2026 may still apply within one year of purchase, according to the provincial page. New purchases after April 15, 2026 are not covered. Point customers to the official page to check.

What licences matter for HVAC companies on PEI?

Inspection Services licenses several areas: boiler and pressure vessel work needs a Mechanical Contractor Licence (the current three-year cycle ends December 31, 2027), plumbing companies need a Plumbing Contractor's Licence, and people servicing propane appliances need an LP Gas Personnel Licence.

Is PEI too small for online marketing to matter?

No. In a small market, word of mouth and online reputation reinforce each other. A complete Business Profile, a steady review flow and a clear website can make you the company Islanders find and recommend.
